A few of my past blogs have talked about the injustices of patriarchy. There are many women in the west who experience it daily, and this blog is not minimizing their suffering in any way whatsoever, but the women who live in the Middle East, in particular Saudi Arabia, literally have no voice.
Just hours ago, a very brave Saudi woman stood up to an abusive religious man as he chastised her in public for wearing nail polish. As the Huffington Post reported “Instead of leaving the mall for having freshly manicured nails like she was ordered to, the woman told the mutawwa that his job is to advise people, not threaten them, and that the government had promised “no more chasing.” Then this courageous woman turned on her cell phone and video taped her confrontation, telling him and the responding police that she was sending it to FB! The story is all over the web now, but I loved this photo ‘borrowed’ from another website.
Patriarchy in every religion needs to end. It has taken away the voice of every mother, sister, daughter and wife of every man who practices it. Spread the word, as I fear for this woman’s life. The more people that know, the safer she will remain. I think a new revolution has begun, and I bet the color of her nail polish is pink!
